This Is My Jam

Echo Nest LogoMy friends over at The Echo Nest have done it again. This time they’ve got a wacky new web 2.0 music app called “This Is My Jam.” It’s still in beta, actually I think it may still be in alpha but they’ve given me the go ahead to share it with y’all.

Here’s how it works: Use the search box to find music you like and then drag favorite tracks into your “jam.” Once you’ve got a bunch of tunes lined up, hit the button and the app makes a beat-matched mix of the tunes you selected. That’s right, the internets can now beat-match! Bye bye DJs? Well, maybe not yet. The mixing is far from perfect, but check it out, there are actually some interesting blends. Here’s one of my “jams”:

If that amazing mix has got you just begging for more you can check out my other jams too. And while you’re there why not sign up to make your own jams and socialize by befriending other folks who’s jams you like. You can even subscribe to RSS feeds of people’s jams. There are obviously some kinks to work out of the system still but I’m excited to see where this thing goes. If you do go try it out I’m sure the Echo Nester’s would appreciate your feedback.

Track of the Week: “Somebody’s a Flirt”

R. Kelly as action figureI wanted to have some new music for the FlosstraPROMus party; something at least slightly Valentine’s Day themed since the party fell on Feb. 14 (pictures here and here). What better combination than some adrenaline infused bassline-house with local Chi-Town hero R. Kelly’s vocals on top, I though to myself. Perhaps the lyrics to I’m a Flirt don’t capture the best V-Day sentiment but here’s the fruit of that thought none the less.

Saturday, March 8 @ Subterranean

With DJ C, Chrissy Murderbot, and resident DJ Zebo

Here’s what the press are saying:

Canadian beatmaker Ghislain Poirier offers music to suit many tastes, but whatever he touches ends up with overflowing bass and plenty of bounce in the rhythm. Hailing from the musical incubator known as Montreal, he first popped up on Chicago’s Chocolate Industries and grabbed attention with remixes for Diverse and Lady Sovereign, but these days it’s his original compositions that are getting the remix treatment from the likes of Modeselektor and We Are Wolves. On “No Ground Under,” his recent release on the venerated Ninja Tune imprint, Poirier configures stomping drums and swarming bass into hip-hop, reggae, baile funk, dubstep and occasionally less classifiable arrangements while collaborating with an international array of MCs. He brings this same borderless range of influences to his DJ sets, which are likely to include just about anything with too much low end and a propensity for inducing ass-shaking. Subterranean’s sound system is in for a workout.
- Newcity Chicago

On March 8th, Montreal’s Ghislain Poirier guests with ragga riddims and deconstructed hip-hop of the Ninja Tune variety.
- Time Out Chicago

…with his 2007 No Ground Under LP (released on the Ninja Tune label), he moved solidly into the pocket with the sound he’s been brewing up these past couple of years — ruff’n'tumble riddims from the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and the Middle East threaded on deep, block-rattling basslines with a fair amount of digital dirt thrown in for good measure.
- Gapers Block

…you are guaranteed to get down on the dancefloor with the Montreal-based producer’s blend of ragga, hip-hop and grime beats.
- Going.com Editor’s Pick

It all goes down at:

Subterranean | 2011 W. North Ave, Chicago | $5, 21 Plus | 10pm to 3am

Presented by | Mashit.com | Coldgrums.com | No Mas Tequila | Ninja Tune

Warrior Queen and The Heatwave; “Things Change (DJ C Remixes)”

If you heard The Heatwave’s England Story DJ mix for the Bloggariddims podcast you’ll noWarrior Queen and The Heatwave Things Change 12inch doubt be excited to hear that the Soul Jazz record label is about to release the tracks from the mix as an album.

From the Soul Jazz Records website:

An England Story - The Culture of the MC in the UK 1983-2008. Featuring a who’s who of the stars of UK Dancehall/Grime/Hip-Hop/Jungle over the last 25 years up to the present. Roots Manuva, Papa Levi, Stush, General Levy, Estelle, London Posse, Tenor Fly… and the list goes on! Double CD plus 2 Volumes of super-loud double vinyl - this is a killer album…

This release is gonna be absolutely wicked. So needless to say, I was beyond honored when The Heatwave asked me to provide a remix for the 12-inch single featuring Warrior Queen. The original track, called Things Change, features The Heatwave’s Piano Riddim underneath the Queen’s bubbling vocals. The single features that version along with the Piano instrumental and my remix, and will be released ahead of the album, next Monday, Feb 18.

In honor of that release I’ve worked up a couple remixes of my remix for your downloading pleasure:

Track of the Week: “Jesus Walks” Rmx.

Kenye WestYou may have heard this one in a couple of my mixes; I’ve been spinning it for quite a while now. It’s stayed in my crate through thick and thin while numerous others have been tossed aside. You may have already found it too; it’s been available for free for at least a couple of years over at Soulchampion.com.

The rhythm harkens back to my favorite period of the U.K. garage era. Before dubstep took hold with it’s minimal beats and stark sounds, there was an up-tempo swing in the popular 2-step garage tracks that I loved. Thankfully that bouncy vibe is coming back. You can hear it in recent dubstep tracks like Benga & Coki’s (seemingly soca influenced) Night. Not to mention the 4/4 Bassline stuff which digs back even further, recalling 2-step’s predecessor, speed garage.

Benga & Coki; Night Video

This week’s track is by Unknown Souljah, and as the name suggests, I had no idea who this was when I originally got it. But then I recently ran into G Notorious who runs Soulchampion.com — and who I’ve known for years — and I asked about Unknown Souljah. “That’s me!” he said, and I was like “Damn, man! I’ve been playing your track at almost every gig and didn’t even know it was yours.” It’s a 2-step garage remix of Kanye West’s Jesus Walks and it’s sick. If you’ve been sleeping get it here:

Two New Mashups: Starkey vs. Missy/Ginuwine

Hi all, sorry it’s taken me so long to get around to writing on here…things have been super-busy. I’ll be on more often in the near future–promise!

Anyway, today we have two new mashup’s of Starkey’s “Corner Store” feat. Xploder (get the original here). This first one is Corner Store + Ginuwine’s “Pony”:

I played it for Starkey, and he’s like “hey, I’ve got a Corner Store blend myself…” So now I present Corner Store + Missy Elliott’s “Lick Shots”:

Mashup(s) of the Week(s)

More of Our Boots Album CoverOK, it’s officially been over 5 weeks since we posted a “Mashup of the Week” here. Our bad!

Today we’ll try and heal the wounds. Our own wounded blog activity since the o-so-hectic holiday season, and the gaping holes we’ve left in your lives since we haven’t been providing you with a weekly dosage of Mashit mashups.

First of all, allow us to present the following blends that we discovered over on the Virb page of Le Putassier Sound System. Many of these remixes just so happen to borrow heavily from Mashit’s back catalog and we’re thrilled with the outcome. These first two tracks are our faves, but we’re presenting you with one for each of the past 5 weeks that we’ve neglected to supply you with fresh mashups.

Beyoncé vs. DJ C; Work It Out (Crazy)

Aren’t those awesome!

Track of the Week

Mashit Track of the Week LogoNow that we’ve done our civic duty, we’d like to announce that we’ll be switching this feature from the name “Mashup of the Week” to “Track of the Week.” A number of the tracks we had posted in the past were not really mashups and we don’t want to limit ourselves. So from now on it’s “Track of the Week” and no promises, but we’ll try and stick to it on a more regular basis.

Mashup of the Week: “Ain’t No Other Man” Blaerg Remix

Blaerg At Age 16Blaerg sent in this bangin’ remix of Christina Aguilera’s Ain’t No Other Man. As is often the case here, this track is really a remix rather than a combination-of-tracks mashup. Blaerg does however mash-up Amen and Think breaks, and stirs them in with a chopped-up version the DJ Premier produced Aguilera pop number.

Mashup of the Week: “Lexie La”

The very first Mashup of the Week that I posted on this blog was a mix of 50-Cent’s I Get Money with Lexie Lee’s Woman Run It Vocal. It was a weird one. I had to pitch up Lexie’s vocals to get them to work harmonically with the beat. Wyclef JeanYou can hear it tactfully mixed in to DJ Kowalski’s Tetrachave mix, and you can also still download it, and the a-capella if you feel like doing your own mix.

More recently, while working on my mix for Samurai.FM, I produced another mashup using Woman Run It, this time on the Fugee-La beat, and I’m much happier with it. Not only is Fugee-La one of my all-time favorite beats, but I didn’t have to tweak Lexie’s vocals all to hell, and you can hear her wicked lyrics much more clearly:
